Open Studio Sundays

First Sundays, 1 – 4 pm | Art Education Center

Make Open Studio Sunday part of your family’s monthly routine! Visit the Art Education Center anytime between 1 and 4 pm to participate in art activities inspired by objects from the VMFA collection. A new art project is offered every month, led by VMFA Youth Studio staff and volunteers.  (For groups of eight or more children, please email youthstudio@vmfa.museum.)

February 4: Celebrate Black History Month
Produce your own mountainous landscape inspired by Virginian artist George H. Ben Johnson.

March 4: Terracotta Army
Create artwork inspired by the exhibition Terracotta Army: Legacy of the First Emperor of China.

April 1: April Fools! Take & Make Activity
Design an optical illusion artwork that tricks your brain! *Due to the holiday, April will feature a self-guided activity

May 6: Surreal Dreamscapes
Celebrate Salvador Dali’s birthday (May 11) by creating a layered “surreal” dreamscape.

Free, no registration required. Children must be accompanied by an adult.


ChinaFest: Year of the Earth Dog

Sat, Feb 10, 10 am – 4:30 pm | VMFA 

Bring the whole family to celebrate the Lunar New Year and ChinaFest: Year of the Earth Dog!

Create an Earth Dog lantern and make your own watercolor lotus card. Enjoy demonstrations and colorful performances, including the Lion Dance, to welcome the Chinese New Year!

Free, no registration required. 
Entry to the Terracotta Army exhibition not included. Visitors interested in visiting the special exhibition are strongly encouraged to purchase their tickets in advance.
