• Matching Gifts

  Corporate matching gifts are a great way to maximize personal contributions to the museum. Many employers will match your charitable contribution to VMFA with an equal or higher amount if you or your spouse are an employee, retiree, or board member of a company.

• Gifts of Stock

  Publicly Traded Securities: Gifts of publicly traded securities that have appreciated in value allow you to claim a charitable deduction for the full market value of the securities on the date the gift is made. You pay no capital gains tax on the appreciation, and the museum receives the full value of the gift.

  To make a gift of securities to VMFA, please follow the steps below:

  • Instruct your broker to transfer the chosen securities to one of VMFA’s two brokerage accounts via the Depository Trust Company (DTC):

  •  Notify VMFA that you have initiated the gift so that we may properly allocate the funds and provide you with a tax receipt. Contact Shanna Chandler, VMFA Senior Advancement Services Manager, at 804.340.1648 or shanna.chandler@vmfa.museum with your broker’s name and phone number, the stock you wish to give, including the number of shares and the intended purpose of your gift.

  • Once the securities have been transferred by the DTC, VMFA will be notified that your gift has been received.

  Closely Held Securities: Gifts of stock in closely held corporations may result in substantial tax benefits in the form of charitable deductions and avoidance of capital gains taxes. Closely held securities can be especially attractive in funding charitable remainder trusts or charitable remainder lead trusts. Because special regulations apply to gifts of this kind, we encourage you to consult your tax adviser when considering such a gift. 

• IRA Gifts and Donor Advised Funds

  A gift from your IRA or Donor Advised Fund is a tax-savvy way to make an impact at VMFA.  

  Qualified Charitable Distributions
  Individuals aged 70 ½ years or older have the opportunity to make a tax-free gift directly from your individual retirement account (IRA) to a qualified charity such as VMFA. The transfer generates neither taxable income nor a tax deduction, so you benefit even if you do not itemize your deductions. Gifts up to $108,000 are eligible for this benefit, which is commonly called the IRA charitable rollover. 

  Donor Advised Funds (DAF) are a popular tool to achieve your short and long-term philanthropic goals. You receive a charitable income tax deduction at the time the fund is created and then can recommend one-time or ongoing gifts to qualified organizations like the museum. By naming VMFA as the beneficiary of your account or a percentage of the fund, a DAF can also become an estate gift.

• Gifts of Art

  Since the museum's founding, VMFA's collection has been enriched by gifts of art and acquisition funds from generous patrons. Its continued growth depends solely on private support. 

  VMFA recognizes art donors through the John Barton Payne Society. The Honorable John Barton Payne donated his collection of 50 paintings to the Commonwealth in 1919. Gifts of art from other donors soon followed, and in 1932, Judge Payne proposed a $100,000 challenge grant to build a museum for this burgeoning public art collection. Governor John Garland Pollard accepted the challenge, and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts opened its doors in 1936.
