Community Volunteers

Community Volunteers help make our collections available to the public 365 days a year. From greeting visitors or assisting children in the art studios to gardening or dusting display cases, a variety of volunteer opportunities are available.

We welcome volunteers seven days a week from before the museum opens to when it closes. Some opportunities require an ongoing commitment. Others are one-time activities.

We strive to place volunteer applicants of all ages, backgrounds, and interests and encourage family and group volunteering. We also welcome students seeking community-service hours for school or other extracurricular activities. Court-mandated community service placements can usually be made as well.

Our volunteer programs are flexible, but please note that placements depend on position availability and suitability. Most volunteer positions require a reference and background check.

While opportunities may vary at any given time, the positions below are consistently available.

To apply, contact Kim Frola, Director of Volunteer Programs, Student Career Experiences, and Community Service, at kim.frola@vmfa.museum or 804.340.1461.

Ask Me Ambassadors (AMAs)

Serving as the welcoming face of VMFA, AMAs greet visitors and assist with coat check, wayfinding, ushering, taking tickets, thanking visitors, and gathering feedback. AMAs should have positive customer service and interpersonal skills and be reliable, enjoy working with the public and on a team, and be able to take initiative.

AMAs commit to at least two 2.5-hour shifts per month, generally from 9:30 am–noon, noon–2:30 pm, and 2:30–5 pm, seven days a week. On Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday evenings, 5-7 pm and 7–9 pm shifts are also available.

Family Day Event Assistants

Family Days are one-time opportunities that provide a great way to get involved. Family Day Event Assistants help with greeting and directing visitors, art activity stations, artist demonstrations, line management, ushering for performances, setup, and cleanup. Family Day Event Assistants should be customer service-oriented and enjoy working with a large, diverse, multi-generational audience.

The Council of VMFA

Serving VMFA since 1955, The Council of VMFA is a longstanding volunteer organization that always welcomes new members. These dedicated museum members work on behalf of VMFA to enhance community outreach and participation.

Council members interact with visitors, assist in the VMFA Shop, help care for the galleries, work in the Freeman Library, assist in the Robins Sculpture Garden, and greet school groups. They also organize a Fine Arts and Flowers exhibition biennially to benefit the museum, and coordinate Membership Enrichment Programs for their members.
