2019–20: Metamorphosis

Teen Stylin’ is a free twelve-week program held each spring during which students work with professional designers to create innovative garments inspired by VMFA’s permanent collection.
Students in grades 6-12 are selected through an application process designed to serve as a practical experience in applying for higher education or competitive programs.
The 2020 Teen Stylin’: Metamorphosis program married creative fashion design with the principles of visual art, science, and mathematics. Student designers used creative construction and alternative material application techniques to create wearable works of art that can include moveable parts, lights, and other materials.

This year, the novel COVID-19 virus necessitated the museum to close its doors in March, just halfway through the Teen Stylin’ program Although the closure prevented future classes from meeting in-person and resulted in the cancellation of the final runway show, VMFA staff worked to move the program online, and nearly half the students chose to continue the program virtually.

The theme Metamorphosis took on a whole new meaning due these unprecedented circumstances. The students quickly adapted to new ways of creating, learning, and socializing from the confines of their homes. This book features the 25 students who persevered through the challenges and remained in the virtual program until a culminating Photoshoot Day was held at VMFA on July 12, 2020. These are photographs of their work.
