Pottery Classes

Pottery Classes at VMFA Studio SchoolA favorite of many students, pottery classes attract people who want to have fun exploring clay through tile-making, hand-building, wheel-throwing and more.  From sculpture to functional serving pieces, participants create works in clay in a well-designed studio and supportive environment.

Resident Potter Steven Glass teaches weekly classes with visiting artists conducting most weekend workshops.

For students of all levels, this class teaches pottery making and design using various materials and techniques, including wheel-thrown and hand-built methods. By exploring the history of pottery making, students gain a better understanding of design. Individual critiques and technical assistance provided. Firing, glazes, and 25 pounds of clay included. Extra clay is available for purchase.

Create sculptural forms and hand-built vessels in this class that focuses on techniques, including coil and slab construction methods. Students experiment with various glazes and slips and are introduced to the history of ceramic art. Bring sketches of ideas to the first session. Both beginning and experienced clay students are welcome. Firing, glazes, and 25 pounds of clay included. Extra clay is available for purchase.

[67] May Small Scale Sculpture Intensive

Thu, Apr 30– May 21 10 am1 pm (4 sessions) | Studio School, Lower Level

Create small clay sculpture in this intensive class that focuses on various techniques including coil and slab construction. With guidance from the instructor, students will work with glazes and slips and should be able to complete one or two small clay sculptures during class. Bring sketches and ideas to the first class. Clay and glazes are included. Fired pieces may be picked up a week later than the final class.
