I am interested in architecture in much the same way I am interested in sculpture—both study how we implicitly relate our bodies to physical objects in space.

—Diana al-Hadid

Formally trained in sculpture, al-Hadid examines the relationship of architecture to the human body.  More explicitly, she is interested in the historical and the histories that have born witness to human inventiveness and destruction.

Woven City is a relief painting—a three-dimensional hanging sculpture. The painting defies logic as it is carved and excised to expose the substructure of the wall. In it, al Hadid weaves a tapestry of histories of human achievement that haven fallen into ruin.
