This lavishly illustrated manuscript is a copy of the Shalihotra, an exhaustive treatise on the origins, characteristics, and care of horses. Probably commissioned by a wealthy Hindu landowner or a minor king in eastern Andhra Pradesh, its Sanskrit text is written in the regional language Telugu. This painter was not just illustrating a book; he was helping to build an encyclopedic and monumental statement about the horse.
