Part of a group "Suite of Neo-Russian Furniture" (L2016.12.1-8)
This furniture (L2016.12.3,.5-.6, .8) belongs to an impressive Old Russian Style suite that comprises four tables, a bench, an armchair, and two shelves. A large table from the suite is displayed in the museum’s galleries devoted to Fabergé. Made near Moscow, this rare group survived intact through both World War I and the Russian Revolution. The makers established a name for themselves after exhibiting furniture at the Paris Exposition Universelle in 1900. The subject matter of the brass panels is taken from Aleksandr Pushkin’s 1833 poem Tale of the Tsar’s Dead Daughter and the Seven Warriors, a retelling of the story of Little Snow White as recounted by the Brothers Grimm. The suite may have been commissioned by N. Troubetskoy, a Russian prince.
