Shark was a brown colt descended from the Darley Arabian, one of the three most important Arabian stallions from which English thoroughbred racing stock descends. Foaled in 1771, Shark had a successful career at the Newmarket racecourse between 1774 and 1779. He was eventually exported to America, where he proved a successful sire at stud in Virginia. A writer in the American Turf Register of 1830 stated that Shark “did as much to enhance the value of the bloodstock of the United States as any horse ever imported.”
