The Kaurava chief Duryodhana, upon seeing the strength of the opposing Pandava troops, grew uneasy. His own forces, however, would not let him remain disheartened. As told in the Gita’s Book One, verses 12–13, his commander Bhishma—shown here in his grand war chariot—sounded a mighty conch-shell horn. The clamorous response from his army’s trumpeters, drummers, and other musicians appears in the colorful landscape below: “Thereupon, the conch horns and the kettledrums, the cymbals, drums, and trumpets all at once were sounded. The uproar was tremendous.”
