The term maebyeong is derived from the vase's function for the use of holding plum flowers, examples of which are exhibited in early paintings. The distinctive features of a maebyeong include high broad shoulders that taper toward a narrow base, presumably to be covered by celadon glaze. The unfinished surface of this vessel suggests that it might have been a product for common people's daily use or a funeral vessel recovered from a tomb.
