“The still lifes were all started with abstraction in mind, and they’re all done the same way as Kenneth Noland’s, stained acrylic paint on raw cotton duck, and things like that.” —David Hockney

Hockney began his career in the early 1960s as a member of the British Pop Art movement. Unlike that of his American counterparts, who appropriated their imagery from advertising and mass media, Hockney’s work was autobiographical. Blue Interior and Two Still Lifes uses the simplified forms and bright colors of Pop Art, but also contains references to the stained canvases of 1960s Color-Field painting (as seen in this gallery) and to the volumes and shapes of Cezanne’s still lifes. The colors and subjects in this painting also reflect the unique light and lifestyle of California, Hockney’s home after moving to the United States in 1964.
