Richard Riemerschmid, known for his furniture, ceramics, glass, metalwork, textiles, and architectural designs, was instrumental in the formation of the Vereinigte Werkstätten für Kunst im Handwerk in Munich, as well as the design collaborative Deutscher Werkbund. This chair is identical to several examples that were displayed by Riemerschmid at the World’s Fair in Paris in 1900. The construction relates to furniture made in England during the Arts and Crafts Movement there, while its curvilinear forms are elements seen in German Art Nouveau (known as Jugendstil or Youth Style).
Gift of Sydney and Frances Lewis
A similar piece was displayed at the World's Fair, Paris, 1900.
