Victor Chocquet, a customs official who avidly collected art, supported Cézanne during the artist’s early career. Cézanne received his first ever commission from him— this portrait resulted from that exchange. Chocquet particularly admired the modeling Cézanne achieved in this painting through the buildup of small brushstrokes and the use of complementary colors, such as the green and red tones of the cheeks. Upon his death in 1891, this visionary collector held more than thirty paintings by Cézanne in his collection along with artworks by fellow Impressionists Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Claude Monet.
