In response to the popularity of Chinese blue-and-white wares on the international ceramic market, kilns outside of China attempted to create similar pieces. Because a stable cobalt blue pigment was not readily available, Vietnamese potters were the first to develop a successful formula to rival the Chinese. While Vietnamese blue-and-white wares follow Chinese models in shape and in decoration, the looser brushwork and more abstracted forms of this and other Vietnamese wares have a style all their own.
