Miyagawa Choshun was an accomplished artist in the ukiyo-e style, depicting the new urban culture of Japan’s “floating world” with images of pleasure houses and fashionable courtesans. Here he gracefully renders a woman dressed in a formal kimono. Its layers of patterned garments are tied together in the front with a large sash, known as an obi. The woman’s expression is modest, and the family crest on her outer garment indicates her high-ranking status.
