The lion depicted on this horse trapping wears a crown on top of his curly mane. According to bestiaries of the period, smaller lions with such idealized curls were peaceful, unlike the fierce, larger lions with straight manes. This lion's crown, curls, and smile identify him as a model king--one who favors peace and love rather than the strength and intimidation employed by tyrants. Inscribed "Amo amar" (I love to love), this pendant would have decorated the harness of a horse.
