Square-shaped bronzes appeared in the late Shang dynasty. This container resembles a house. An animal mask, or taotie, is shown upside down on each side of the slanting roof. The layered decoration on the vessel and its overall proportions demonstrate the sophisticated design and casting techniques developed in late Shang society.
