In this scene, a woman walks outside a fenced courtyard, wearing a kimono overcoat with intricate floral designs and a heavy scarf around her neck. The layers of foliage and greenery behind her display Ito Shinsui’s masterful skills in depicting both botanical and figural subjects. Unlike his contemporary Kawase Hasui, who specialized in landscapes, Shinsui produced hundreds of paintings and woodblock prints featuring women, using vibrant color palettes and Western-influenced painting techniques.
