De Dreux was seemingly destined to have a notable career in the arts. His father was a painter and as a child, his uncle, the painter Pierre-Joseph De Dreux-Dorcy often took him to the studio of Géricault. De Dreux had a long-lasting relationship with the Salon, where he exhibited regularly for many decades. After accompanying King Louis-Philippe on an official trip to England in 1849, De Dreux attached himself to the court and society of the Second Empire and enjoyed his status as the favorite equestrian artist of Emperor Napoleon III.
