This scene of urban life celebrates Shinn’s versatility, wedding his experience as a magazine illustrator with his talents as an artist in pastel. Pressed to the upper edge of the image, the driver of a “Metrapolitan” omnibus braces against the frigid wind. Though they trudge through the snow-covered street, the horses struggle in vain; the interior of the bus is empty of passengers. Only one other figure is discernible; a dark and folded form composed of hat, cloak, and umbrella is visible at right. The painting’s composition reinforces the sense of arduous weather conditions: the entire lower half is covered in a blanket of white, its vast expanse causing a visceral chill.
