Several schools of late Gothic wood carving flourished in southern Germany, especially in Bavaria. The strongest talent active there was the prolific sculptor Hans Leinberger. This wooden statue of St. Stephen, who holds the stones with which he was martyred, was executed by an artist clearly connected with the school of Leinberger. The monumentality of the blocklike figure, emphasized by its deeply undercut, richly articulated drapery and by the fact that it is painted to imitate marble, is characteristic of the last phase of Gothic art. The architectural framework in which this figure originally stood is in need of conservation.
