Sculptures of the Virgin were not restricted to churches but also were intended for pilgrimage crossroads, entrances to towns, or, as the relatively small size of this figure suggests, for personal meditation in private chapels. Regional characteristics suggest that this piece was executed in the area around Paris. Part of its elegant appeal derives from the beauty of the finely polished marble.
