Walker Evans lived among the American expatriate literary community in Paris before settling in New York in 1928. There he transferred his more poetic impulses into a visual medium, teaching himself to use a camera. Early in his career, Evans blended the formalism of European modernism with a deep interest in documentary photography of the commonplace. His photographs often interject humor and irony into the fleeting moments of daily life as in Main Street, Ossining, New York.
