Although little is known about the specific character or spirit portrayed by Bena Biombo masks, they are used in marking life’s important passages, such as initiation rites and funeral ceremonies. Munjinga, or the messenger character, is the first mask to appear during an initiation ceremony. The coloration and facial patterning are similar to masks of the neighboring Pende culture.
