Amitabha, also known as Amida, is shown descending from heaven to greet the souls of devotees as they arrive in the Pure Land, with his right hand displaying the welcome gesture, or mudra. The painting features a female patron sitting with a child under the eaves of a house, reciting the Amida’s prayer. Rendered in gold dust and decorated in the cut-gold technique, a painting of this type would be placed before devotees as they prayed for rebirth in the Pure Land.
