“Over the years I have vacillated between the force fields of Mondrian and Duchamp, closer to one sometimes, closer to the other sometimes.” —Richard Roth

Roth urges viewers to consider the delineations between kitsch and art, object and idea, material and form. His compositions are inspired by a myriad of sources such as Navajo blankets, commercial design, mollusk shells, and even licorice candies. In his paintings, Roth uses all aspects of the frame—not only the two-dimensional surface, but also the top, bottom, and sides. In doing this, the artist pushes the concept of painting beyond the two-dimensional and into the conversation of three-dimensional objects. He considers using the identical substructure or frame as liberating—allowing the artist to move with great freedom and inventiveness from one work to another. Emerging in the late 1960s when Minimalism and Conceptualism dominated the art world, Roth’s work has continued to give deference to the histories of Modernism while also exploring its contemporary influences.
