This panel’s almost frothy low-relief ornament is typical of later Sri Lankan decorative sculpture. Within the lower portions of its scrolling, intertwined foliage is a fantastic kirtimukha (face of glory). A leonine face with bulging eyes, this prevalent motif was often used near doors or windows to ward off evil. This panel’s original function is uncertain. It may have formed a portion of a box or coffer, or perhaps been part of an ornamental surround for a household shrine’s miniature doorway.
