The
single word inscribed on one of these cups (81.17 and 81.52) records the name
Soteria. The name comes from the word soter, whose meanings range from
“deliverer” and “savior” to “kept safe” and was used both as a proper female
name (Soteria) and as the personification of Safety/Deliverance. The name is in
the genitive case, so the inscription may indicate an owner (Soteria’s [cup])
or that someone dedicated it to Deliverance in thanksgiving
