The elaborate vases from Centuripe, Sicily, were decorated with tempera paints and feature scenes of farewell (as on the lid of this vase), marriage, and Dionysiac ritual. The range of colors and complexity of the scenes are thought to resemble ancient wall paintings (most of which have been lost). This vase was made with five precariously stacked sections (foot, bowl, lid, stem of lid handle, and knob of lid handle) in imitation of containers for food and precious objects.
