Holy objects such as fragments of the True Cross or of the bodies of deceased saints were often placed in special containers called reliquaries. Small reliquaries were often worn suspended from the neck as expressions of their owners’ piety. This pendant, or enkolpion, was faced on both sides with gold-and-enamel plaques showing Christ flanked by Saints Paul and Peter on the front, and the Virgin Mary with Saints Luke and John on the back.
