The multitalented Albert Herter belonged to the generation of academically trained artists associated with the Aesthetic movement who sought commissions in book and magazine illustration at the turn of the 20th century. This design of two Aesthetic maidens was produced as the cover for an issue of Ladies’ Home Journal. One of the first mass-market, generalinterest magazines, it featured an unprecedented amount of illustration, helping to establish the art form as a prestigious career option. Published by Cyrus H. K. Curtis and edited by Edward Bok, the Ladies’ Home Journal pioneered the concept of color covers—largely directed at women—that changed monthly and were not necessarily related to the contents.
