Born in Shiga, east of Kyoto, Yamamoto Shunkyo was a renowned Maruyama-school artist who emphasized sketching directly from nature. In these paired screens, he depicted cypress trees on the right and tiny travelers climbing on the snow-covered slope on the left. Using ink washes and gradation, Shunkyo combined landscapes of two different seasons into one continued scene with a light-and-shadow atmosphere.
