LeRoy Henderson, a native of Richmond, attended Virginia State University. He moved to New York in the early 1960s and earned a masters degree at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn in 1966. Since the late 1960s he has photographed the rising protest culture in the United States, covering antiwar marches and civil rights rallies. Scene in Brooklyn captures the tense moment after Henderson was pushed in the back by a baton as he photographed a student protest rally. He quickly turned around and snapped this photograph of the policemen walking closely behind him.
