Fantin-Latour is perhaps best known for his mastery of still life. Here he precisely renders grapes and apples, emphasizing their shape and colors, as well as the way light defines their forms. His realistic approach to this subject matter recalls the famous story penned by Roman author Pliny the Elder (23–79 AD) in which the ancient Greek artist Zeuxis depicted grapes so realistically that birds tried to eat them.
Signed and dated in upper right corner: "Fantin .80"; ten labels encapsulated in plastic on reverse; two Christies labels and one Mellon label on reverse.
