This gilded silver box is enameled in the distinctive palette of Lucknow’s enamel artists: translucent green, cobalt blue, and purplish red, with opaque yellow and orange. A charming frieze of birds runs around its sides. On its lid, a pond populated with fish and lotuses lies in the foreground while flocks of fluttering and prancing birds fill the land and sky around a tree on a central hillock. Sections of missing enamel, particularly in the pond, reveal the deep engraving employed in the champlevé enameling technique.
