Sketching to Learn: Beyond the Frame

Beyond the Frame

Ask students to do the following:

  • Pick an artwork and imagine what the scene beyond the borders of the canvas or paper looks like. For a three dimensional work, imagine the scene it would be in and the other objects that might be there.
  • Sketch the larger scene you’ve imagined. Use your imagination and the clues from the artwork to sketch the scene beyond the frame.

Ask the students to share their drawings and ideas.  Discuss similarities, differences, and what led them to draw what they did.
