Winning Designs Recognized at Teen Stylin’

Exhibition in MWV Education Center:
This exhibition features the 2014 Teen Stylin’ designer renderings and garments awarded Best Overall, Best in Show, Best Use of Alternative Materials and Creative Construction, and Best Interpretation of a Work of Art.

Teen Stylin’ is VMFA’s eight-week program for Virginia students, grades 6–12, with a passion for clothing design, studio arts, installation art, and/or sculpture. The yearly program, which began in 2005, provides aspiring designers with the guidance and tools to create their own one-of-a-kind, wearable works of art. Each Teen Stylin’ culminates with multiple runway exhibitions featuring students’ designs.

This year, Teen Stylin’ 2014: Forbidden focused on themes found in the special exhibition Forbidden City: Imperial Treasures from the Palace Museum, Beijing. Students explored Form and Construction, The Elite, Decoration and Adornment, Dualities and Dichotomies, Perfect Harmony, Untold Stories, Symbols and Secrets, and Heaven on Earth. Teen Stylin’ 2014: Forbidden involved 96 student designers representing more than 40 schools in the greater Richmond area and across the Commonwealth. Participants were nominated by teachers or screened through a competitive application process.
