Summer 2024 Classes & Programs

Registration for Members

To accommodate the high volume of enrollment, members-only registration for the following categories will begin as noted below:

Tue, Apr 9 | 8 am
Studio School and Adult Art History Classes

Wed, Apr 10 | 8 am
Early Childhood Classes & Camps (age 5 and under), Kids Studio Classes (ages 5–12), and Teen Summer Classes (ages 13–17)

Expand your creativity and artistic awareness, build your own portfolio for college, or simply spend time with peers and professional artists through these studio classes related to VMFA’s world-renowned collection. Enrollment is limited in order to provide individual instruction and accommodations for teenagers of all skill levels. Register online or by phone 804.340.1405.

Teen Studio Programs

Focus on your favorite style, medium, or technique in one or all of these innovative classes. Designed for teens in middle or high school, these classs help students grow creatively, explore self-expression, and develop works for a college portfolio.

[TW8] Digital: Photography of Today

Wednesdays, Apr 17 & 24 | 5–7 pm (2 sessions) | Pauley Center, Computer Lab

Ages 13–17 | Level up your photo skills! With the help of a skilled instructor, you’ll learn to effectively shoot and edit images with any camera or device, from digital DSLRs to iPhones. DSLR cameras are available for use, but students are welcome to bring their own cameras, smartphones, and flash drives.

$50 (VMFA members $40)


[TW9] Drawing: History of Manga

Wednesdays, May 1 & 8 | 5–7 pm (2 sessions) | Art Educational Center, Studio 1
Anh Do

Ages 13–17 | Learn about the history, culture, and characteristics that make up the art of manga, a specific style of Japanese comics and illustration. Follow along with exercises and guided practice to boost your manga-drawing skills.

$50 (VMFA members $40)

Explore the galleries and boost drawing skills associated with different art movements, styles, and cultures. Designed for teens in middle or high school, monthly sessions include demos, art talks, and independent instruction to accommodate both beginning and accomplished artists.

Ages 13–17 | Draw inspiration from your city! Use depth and perspective to realistically depict buildings and architectural structures in Richmond’s Museum District.

[TD9] Drawing: Figure it Out

Friday, May 17, 5–7 pm | Art Education Center, Studio 1

Ages 13–17 | Analyze the proportions of the human body to illustrate realistic figures to scale. Work with different techniques such as gesture drawing to bring movement to the page.

Each of these innovative workshops focuses on a unique art movement, culture, and medium associated with the VMFA collection. Teenagers benefit from learning new techniques and using a variety of professional tools and materials.

Ages 13–17 | Flowers? For spring? Groundbreaking. Be inspired by historic depictions of spring in the galleries and by classic vintage garments as you learn techniques to render your own fashion illustration.

Ages 13–17 | Whether you’re new to pastels or an experienced artist, learn techniques designed to enhance proficiency and boost confidence in drawing. Taking cues from the great outdoors, try your hand at rendering scenes and elements of nature.

[TS11] Fashion: Cosplay in a Day

Saturday, May 11, 11 am–4 pm | Pauley Center, Studio A

Ages 13–17 | Express your inner warrior and creativity by pulling inspiration from the Samurai Armor from the Collection of Ann and Gabriel Barbier-Mueller special exhibition. Learn how to make armor-inspired wearable art with foam in this one-day cosplay challenge. Students will need to bring a bag lunch. Please, no peanut products.
