The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is seeking artists to participate in the Statewide Artist Workshop Program. Proposals are being accepted in all areas of the visual and performing arts.
The Virginia Museum is world-renowned for its innovative and energetic statewide arts programs. Among the most popular and rewarding is the Statewide Artist Workshop Program, in which professional artists of exceptional talent conduct a series of visual or performing arts workshops in communities throughout the state.
Each year, approximately 10 artists are selected to participate in this program, based on their work, the merits of their proposals, teaching experience, demonstrated commitment to professional excellence, and communication skills.
Sponsors
The artist workshops are sponsored the museums, art centers, and arts associations throughout Virginia that are Statewide Partners of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Richmond.
Workshop Format
Both visual and performing arts workshops should be designed to last five hours, beginning at 9 am and ending at around 3:30 pm to allow for breaks. If requested by the sponsor, artists may present a one-hour lecture/demonstration or performance the evening prior to the workshop, to introduce the subject to the community and area art educators.
Schedule
Each artist conducts approximately five workshops during the year. Schedules are arranged in advance by agreement between the artist and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, based on sponsor requests, artist availability, and current funding. Where appropriate, workshops are scheduled within geographic circuits. Artists travel by car to each location and must possess a valid driver’s license. Artists are responsible for transporting all necessary supplies to each workshop site.
Publicity
The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts promotes the workshops in a biannual publication and provides a press kit with a news release and photographs to each sponsoring organization.
Honorarium
An honorarium of $400 per workshop is awarded to each participating artist, $100 of which is for in-state travel expenses. Out-of-state artists receive additional reimbursement for travel to and from Virginia. Fees for performing arts groups are negotiated on a case-by-case basis. Meals and overnight lodging are provided by the sponsoring organization.
Deadline
Submissions are accepted on an ongoing basis.
Equal Opportunity
The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts provides equal opportunity to all persons regardless of race, color, gender, creed, or national origin. Applications from minority groups are encouraged.
