His nonfiction titles include Walking on Water: Black American Lives at the Turn of the Twenty-First Century. He teaches creative writing at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She has also written two novels: All Souls (Harcourt, 2008), which was a finalist for the 2009 Pulitzer Prize; and Florida (Mariner, 2005), which was a finalist for the 2004 National Book Award.
