On his expeditions outside Tokyo, Hasui focused on sketching townscapes to record Japan’s past and its legendary people. Shimohonda in Kanazawa is a former property of Honda Masashige (1580-1647), founder of the Honda clan who served Tokugawa Ieyasu, and the Maeda lords, the second most powerful feudal clan following the Tokugawa shogunate. For his accomplishments, Shimohonda received a large fief in Kanazawa, the capital of Kaga Domain in the early 17th century. This print illustrates a shaded empty lane, where a lone woman in a kimono walks away from the viewer, recalling the former glory of the area.
