LOOK HERE Dazzle - Feast - Speed

LOOK HERE is a series of four themed exhibitions-Dazzle, Feast, Speed, and Mystery-that celebrate the depth and breadth of the VMFA permanent collection. Designed to cross continents, cultures, and centuries, each exhibition in the series makes unexpected connections and offers engaging perspectives of both familiar and unfamiliar objects. LOOK HERE will delight, surprise, and enlighten as it introduces visitors across Virginia to a worldclass collection and allows them to explore it through intriguing themes.
The first exhibition, Dazzle, offers a glimpse into the world of power, luxury and magic. This exhibition will present finely crafted objects in gold, silver, gemstones and other precious materials. Highlights will include elegant jewels, pre-Columbian and African gold; American silver; ancient Chinese. bronzes; and elaborately detailed works from the princely courts of Mughal India.

Next comes Feast, which will explore the relationship between food and art in cultures around the world. Food touches each of our senses in a primal, physical way, but it also represents culturespecific values, symbolizing for some wealth, luxury, and even excess. In many cultures, food is a critical element in rites of initiation and social unity. It can also represent a symbiotic link with the earth and the natural world.

Third in the series is Speed. This exhibition will explore how artists use movement to create spirited and expressive masterpieces. From the frenetic energy of an English horserace to the pageantry of an African dance, expressions of speed in art can communicate motion and emotion. The exhibition will examine how artists in different cultures have dramatically conveyed speed and motion to create timeless and captivating masterpieces.

The final exhibition in the LOOK HERE series will investigate the significant role mystery has played in artistic production. Mystery promises many questions, some answers and, above all, a fascinating exploration of the familiar and strange.
Following their Richmond debuts, the first three exhibitions will travel to museums around the Commonwealth through the Statewide Partnership Program. These traveling exhibitions, along with their accompanying programs, reaffirm VMFA's long-standing commitment to statewide education and collection sharing.
