INSIGHTS SYMPOSIUM

April 9, 2010 | 9am-5pm | Pauley Center

VMFA’s Insights Symposium is a program for college students focusing on recent writings and research by higher education students in Virginia. The symposium is offered to showcase work from across the state of Virginia in the fields of art history and creative writing. New this year, portfolio reviews for undergrads and graduates in studio art.

Registration to attend the symposium opens in January.

VMFA’s educational programs are made possible, in part, by a generous gift from The Council of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.


Submissions for Insights Symposium

Art History and Creative Writing submissions should relate to an artist, work of art, movement, or theme represented in the VMFA collection. For information about the collection, visit Our Collections.

One art history and one creative writing entry will be selected for publication on VMFA’s website by a panel of readers. Please note: VMFA’s website is administered by the Commonwealth of Virginia. Essays that are appropriate for all ages will be posted online. Those containing mature themes and language will be made available through the VMFA Library.

Art History
The Art History field is open to Juniors, Seniors, and Graduate Students. Art History abstracts should be 200-300 words in length. The deadline for abstracts and presenter resumes/CV's has been extended to October 23, 2009 and should be submitted via email. Selected students will be notified by November 20 with full papers due by February 1, 2010. Art History speakers should prepare a 20 minute PowerPoint presentation of their 8-10 page paper.

Creative Writing
The Creative Writing field is open to Juniors, Seniors, and Graduate Students. The deadline for entries and presenter resumes/CV's has been extended to March 1, 2010 and should be submitted via e-mail. Entries should be unpublished work and written within the last year. Selected students will be notified by March 10, 2010. Creative Writing presentations should be no more than 15 minutes in length.


Insights Portfolio Review

Pre-registration required by filling out form below. Please indicate your 1st, 2nd, and 3rd choice for times. 9:30 am, 9:50 am, 10:10 am, 10:30 am, 10:50 am, 11:10 am, 11:30 am

REVIEW SLOT INFORMATION
Slots are 20 minutes long and all mediums are accepted. Should a scheduled student no-show, that slot will be offered to walk-ups. In addition, four walk-up slots will be reserved at 11:50am, first come, first seen.

PORTFOLIO REQUIREMENTS AND SELECTED WINNERS
Portfolios may be in slide, digital, or physical formats. Physical portfolios are limited to 18x24" in size. Each reviewer will select a winning portfolio-selected artists will have their works posted on the VFMA website.
