Scholastic Prep and Assistance Program: Registering Your Work
11 am-12 pm, 12 pm-1 pm, 1-2 pm, 2-3 pm, 3-4 pm, MWV Pauley Center Lobby
Students and teachers with limited access to computers or those who have difficulty registering may come to VMFA’s computer lab to receive step-by-step guided instructions for completing registration. One-hour time blocks will take place over the course of the day. Please register for more than one time block if you are registering more than five works of art or students. Participants should bring a disc with .jpeg images of the works they wish to register.

Well known within the poetry community, acclaimed Virginia poets Anne Clare Hodge, John Hoppenthaler, Deborah Ager, and Bernadette Geyer, will each present a 25-minute reading from their original works. Their respective works have been published and all continue to provide literary contributions to social media as well.

Enjoy the rich and captivating art of ancient Egypt with VMFA Chief Educator Della Watkins and begin to understand its symbolic language.  In these lectures learn how the riddle of Rosetta Stone was the key to interpreting a 5,000 year old remarkable ancient Egyptian civilization known for its longevity, exceptional achievements and fabulous treasures.   In hieroglyphs and amulets, you will recognize familiar pictures and symbols as we journey through Egyptian art in the VMFA collection.

This event complements the exhibition Elvis at 21: Photographs by Alfred Wertheimer. Conversations is a recurring VMFA program that features curators, educators, and other special guest in informal gallery discussions.

The documentary Elvis `56 (1987, 61 min) will be shown before a panel conversation with legendary Elvis at 21 photographer Alfred Wertheimer, the Smithsonian Institution’s
S. Marquette Folley, Big Oldies 107.3 Radio Personality Tony Booth, and classic rock and roll singer/songwriter Ron Moody. Wertheimer will sign editions of the exhibition catalog.

Join artist Diana Al-Hadid and John B. Ravenal, Sydney and Frances Lewis Family Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art for a gallery talk about her large-scale sculpture Trace of a Fictional Third. Al-Hadid is an internationally recognized artist who received her master’s degree from VCU School of the Arts in 2005. Conversations is a recurring VMFA program that features curators, educators, and other special guest in informal gallery discussions.

Making History: A Conversation with David C. Driskell

Distinguished artist, scholar and art collector David C. Driskell will discuss his work with the Barnett-Aden Gallery, Washington, DC (1943-1969). Driskell was a gallery assistant from 1952-1955, the gallery director from 1961-1963, and he also showed there many times. Drawn from the local collection of Margaret and John Gottwald, the show explores production and patronage at mid-century through works once associated with the Barnett-Aden Gallery. Several works by Driskell are featured in the exhibition David C. Driskell will be in conversation with Tosha Grantham, PhD Candidate, Department of Art History, University of Maryland, College Park.

The Short Pump Symphonette is a 20-piece youth and adult string orchestra performing classical and popular music favorites.  The orchestra was created mainly to provide orchestral instruction in the Short Pump area.  They perform in numerous venues around Richmond and have become area favorites.
