This class helps students refine both technical and creative photographic skills. Through discussions, class critiques, and weekly assignments, participants solve problems with exposure, low light situations, and creative ennui and learn time-saving methods for effective digital workflow. A digital SLR to use in class is recommended but not required.

This workshop features the beautiful and easy blue cyanotype process but includes discussions of other processes as well. Students learn to make prints, mix chemistries, and read recipes. The instructor discusses options for making negatives and sources of necessary supplies. Offering substantial time to make prints, this overview of popular "Alt Photo" processes helps students get started in their own home, studio, or darkroom. Designed for photographers, printmakers, and others who wish to work with negatives or drawings.  Chemistry and some supplies are included.

Find out what white balance, resolution, and mega pixels are all about. This class teaches students to use their digital cameras more effectively, including the fundamentals of image capture, camera operation, proper exposure, and using a flash. Weekly assignments and sharing images in class help beginning photographers troubleshoot and develop a creative eye. Bring a digital camera with manual adjustments and the camera manual to the first class.

Do you want to get in the darkroom and experiment with your personal work? This class—primarily spent in the open darkroom—gives students that opportunity, with an instructor available to provide technical support and advice for short- and long-term projects. A 35mm camera with manual settings required. Darkroom fee included.

Prerequisites: black-and-white darkroom

For students with recent experience developing black-and-white film and a knowledge of photo-printing techniques, this class offers additional individualized study as well as technical assistance. While standard darkroom chemicals and equipment are included, students must supply their own film, paper, and specialized chemicals or equipment. This lab is not intended for production printing. Darkroom fee included.


[41] Introduction to Adobe Photoshop Elements

This is the perfect class for those who find the full version of Adobe Photoshop too complicated and cumbersome for their current digital-editing and photo-enhancing needs. Topics include retouching, color correcting, cropping, resizing, turning color images into black and white, making tonal adjustments in layers, and making local corrections with selections and masks. Working in the RAW format and creating greeting or business cards are also covered. Each week, students will have time to work on their own images— the best way to learn!

Prerequisites: Basic computer skills

Learn the basics of Adobe Photoshop Elements—a fun and effective tool for editing, organizing, and sharing photographs. Students should bring a variety of digital photographs on CD, jump drive, or digital camera. Work is performed on PCs, so bring your digital camera’s PC cable. Time is allotted for practice and discussion. Please bring a bag lunch.

Learn about the features of digital cameras, printers, scanners, and recording media as well as concepts such as white balance, resolution, image size, and file formats. Students also discover why there’s a “film speed” setting even though there is no film. Prints may be made at home or through professional photographic services.

Want to learn a fresh approach to travel photography? Explore visual storytelling, which helps you document your journey more effectively. Through slide lecture and discussion, the instructor shares some of her experiences photographing people and places all over the world. The workshop also covers technical problems in travel situations, equipment to bring, and effective digital-workflow ideas. Students have the opportunity to share their travel shots.
