Inspired by the exhibition Maharaja: The Splendors of India’s Great Kings, this intensive four-session class explores the rich history and varied techniques of tie-dye. India, along with Japan and many West African countries, have long histories of dyeing and patterning cotton fabric. A brief survey will introduce the class to examples of these fabrics before teaching the basics of immersion dyeing and a multitude of various tying, stitching, and folding techniques. Expect to come home with unique and beautiful handmade fabrics. A materials fee of $30 (payable to the instructor) covers three yards of cotton fabric, two silk scarves, dyes, and chemicals. Other fabrics and scarves available for purchase from the instructor.

Learn the basics of stained glass and create a small window panel in a choice of patterns. Techniques covered in the workshop include pattern making, glass cutting, copper foiling, soldering, and construction. All materials included.

Discover the history of block prints in India, while learning about fabric pigment and textile printing. Then use intricately carved Indian wooden blocks to print two cotton tea towels. Designed for all levels of experience. Complements VMFA’s exhibition Maharaja: The Splendors of India’s Great Kings. A $10 materials fee is payable to the instructor at the beginning of the workshop.

This workshop teaches you to create fun and funky jewelry from decorative and recycled papers, such as magazines, newspapers, and wallpaper. Simply cut paper into strips and roll it into beads or experiment with some simple techniques for origami jewelry. Using yarn, thread, beads, and vintage buttons, students assemble their creations into necklaces, earrings, and bracelets. Tools and materials for simple beading provided. If you want to get fancy, bring your own findings, accent beads, and wire.
