VMFA Studio School Certificate Program

For students, professionals, or art enthusiasts, the VMFA Studio School’s new Certificate Program offers a core curriculum in the foundations of studio art and art appreciation. In addition to creating a body of work in the studio, students will learn art history and engage in critical inquiry about their own work and the work of others. The VMFA Studio School and the Visual Arts Center of Richmond are collaborating to develop this special program – an opportunity unmatched in the area for personal and professional development. Classes will be offered at both facilities. Upon completion of the program requirements, students will receive a formal certificate and be included in a special student exhibition at the VMFA Studio School Gallery.

Certificates from the VMFA Studio School can be earned in:
- Painting
- Drawing
- Printmaking
- Photography
- Pottery
- Mixed Media

Requirements:
- Annual VMFA Membership
- Completion of core classes
- Completion of required classes and hours in the area of specialization (varies by area but approximately 6 semester long classes of 8 to 12 weeks each)
- Mid-program review and assessment
- Final project
- Final portfolio review

- Basic Drawing: Step One
- Two-Dimensional Design
- Three-Dimensional Design
- Color Journey
- Learning to See Creatively
- Professional Practices for the Visual Artist Workshop 
- Two Survey Art History Lecture Classes
Please note that the Core classes are not offered every semester. 

Class attendance is very important and is required. VMFA Studio School Certificate Program students are required to attend two visual art lectures per year and are encouraged to attend VMFA special exhibitions and tour the permanent galleries.

Students are expected to complete the requirements within 5 years. Students inactive in the program for two consecutive years will be considered withdrawn. The VMFA Studio School Certificate Program is open to anyone age 16 and above. Ages 16 – 17 must have written Studio School administrative and parental approval.  A simple letter if intent is required to enroll in the program.
